Etlingera maingayi, also known as the Malay rose, is a perennial flowering plant in the ginger family. It is found in southern Thailand and Malaysia, where its flowers are consumed as vegetables. This plant grows in disturbed areas and along forest edges, reaching a height of less than 2 meters. Its leaves have a unique appearance with fringed edges and emit a sour scent when crushed. Chemical analysis of the leaves has shown high levels of ferrous ion chelating ability and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity, making it a potential source of natural antioxidants. The leaves also contain a high amount of oil, with lauric acid and decanoic acid being the main components, which may contribute to the sour scent.
