Musa basjoo, also known as Japanese banana, is a species of flowering plant in the banana family. It was originally thought to have originated in Japan, but is now known to have originated in southern China. It is a herbaceous perennial with large leaves and produces male and female flowers on the same inflorescence. It is cultivated for its fibre and as an ornamental plant in gardens outside of its natural range. In Japan, the plant fibres are used to produce textiles, while in traditional Chinese medicine, various parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes. It has gained recognition for its hardiness and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in the UK. The plant also holds cultural significance, as the 17th-century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō took his pen name from it.
