It is a low-growing, perennial herb found in various parts of Africa. Its leaves form a basal rosette and its showy yellow flowers bloom one at a time, followed by another. The plant becomes dormant during winter, but in spring it produces paddle-shaped leaves that lie flat on the ground. It belongs to the Costaceae family, which is closely related to the ginger family. Costus spectabilis is found in tropical regions and prefers moist soil and a humid climate. It is often found in wooded grassland and deciduous woodland. This plant holds cultural significance as it is the national flower of Nigeria and was also included in Meghan Markle's wedding veil to represent the country.
