Chamaecostus cuspidatus, also known as fiery costus or spiral flag, is a herbaceous plant native to eastern Brazil and India. It has large, fleshy leaves with a purple shade on the undersides and orange flowers that bloom during warm months. It is cultivated for its root and is related to gingers, but has been reclassified into its own family, Costaceae. The plant reproduces vegetatively and its seeds are dispersed by birds. In traditional medicine, the dried leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine and the flower petals are edible and nutritious. It is also grown as an ornamental plant and is known for its anti-diabetic properties.
