Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) is a genus of shrubs and small trees comprising approximately 150 species native to the Neotropics, with one native to the Galápagos and introduced more widely. The type species is Cestrum nocturnum L. (Solanaceae SCJN, 2014). The plants are typically evergreen or drought-deciduous, with simple, alternate leaves that lack stipules. Inflorescences are axillary, often fasciculate or glomerulate, sometimes forming panicles; flowers are generally 5-merous, with a tubular to narrowly campanulate corolla that may be cream, white, yellow, orange, red, or greenish, frequently markedly fragrant at night. The calyx is shallowly toothed and subequal to the corolla tube; anthers dehisce by terminal pores or short slits. Fruits are fleshy berries with numerous seeds embedded in a persistent calyx (Hunziker, 2001).

Centers of diversity occur in the Andes and in southeastern Brazil, with many species endemic to cloud forests, dry forests, and secondary habitats at low to middle elevations. One species, Cestrum aurantiacum, is naturalized in parts of the Old World tropics. The genus exhibits classic Neotropical disjunctions among montane and lowland biomes, and localized endemism is high, especially in Colombia and Mexico.

Pollination is predominantly nocturnal lepidopteran, especially hawk moths, as inferred from flower colour, scent, and narrow corolla tubes (Dellinger et al., 2019). Fruits are dispersed by birds, and day-flowering taxa may attract hummingbirds (Fenster et al., 2004). Chromosome counts are frequently 2n = 16, consistent with x = 8 (Hunziker, 2001). Recent phylogenomic work places Cestrum within the tribe Cestreae, sister to Sessea and linked to the JaltomataVesicaria clade, supporting monophylemy but also revealing substantial internal relationships (Särkinen et al., 2013; Olmstead et al., 2008). Ongoing integration of herbarium and field data continues to refine sectional or subgeneric treatments, while historically Sessea has alternatively been treated as a separate genus or merged into Cestrum (Hunziker, 2001; WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024).

Several species are cultivated for ornamental foliage and night-blooming fragrance; C. nocturnum and C. parqui are common in horticulture but occasionally become naturalized weeds. The wood is of minor local use. Conservation concerns include deforestation and habitat fragmentation across the Andes, particularly for narrow endemics; targeted surveys and phylogenetic clarification remain research priorities.
