Vestia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae containing the single species Vestia foetida. It is native to central and southern Chile, growing to 2 m (7 ft) tall by 1.5 m (5 ft) broad. It bears tubular yellow flowers in spring and summer, followed by 4-valved, ovoid capsules containing small, prismatic seeds. It has been used in folk medicine to treat dysentery and appendicitis, and a yellow dye has been extracted from the leaves and stems. It has insecticidal properties, and toxic compounds such as quercetin-3-diglucoside, isoquercetin, an indole alkaloid, diosgenin, and insonuatigenin have been detected in the plant. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and is frost-hardy, but requires some protection from winter winds.
