Mandragora caulescens, also known as the Himalayan mandrake, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Solanaceae family. It is native to the Himalayas, Myanmar, and southwest China. Unlike other species of Mandragora, it has a stem and can grow up to 60 cm tall. It has basal leaves and dark purple or yellow flowers that bloom from April to September. The plant produces greenish white to yellow berries with numerous yellow to light brown seeds. M. caulescens is highly toxic due to the presence of tropane alkaloids, but its roots are used in traditional Chinese medicine for their medicinal properties. It is found in open areas at high altitudes and is used as a substitute for ginseng in some regions.
