Lycium californicum, also known as California boxthorn or California desert-thorn, is a shrub in the nightshade family. It has two varieties - Lycium californicum var. californicum, which is native to the coastal areas of Southern California and Baja California, and Lycium californicum var. arizonicum, found in the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. This thorny shrub has thick, fleshy leaves, bell-shaped white flowers with purple streaks, and bright red berries. The destruction of its natural habitat has led to a decline in its population. It is an important part of the chaparral ecosystem and can be found in coastal sage scrub and riparian areas.
