Lycianthes rantonnetii, also known as the blue potato bush or Paraguay nightshade, is a flowering plant native to South America. It is a rounded evergreen shrub that can reach up to 6 feet in height and produces bright blue-purple trumpet-shaped flowers with a yellow eye in the summer. It is widely cultivated and can be grown in mild or coastal areas, as well as in containers. However, all parts of the plant are considered toxic to humans, despite being related to food plants like the potato and tomato. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and is named after a French horticulturalist. The plant has been placed in the Solanum genus in the past, but recent investigations have resulted in its placement in Lycianthes. There are still many unknown species within this genus that require further study.
