Ipomoea simplex is a species of Convolvulaceae, or Sweet Potato family, found in central and eastern Southern Africa. It is known for its large tuber or root, which is often eaten raw by Xhosa and Sotho herd boys. The species was first described by Carl Peter Thunberg in 1794 and its name, 'Ipomoea', refers to its twining habit. In 1844, the Earl of Derby presented Kew Gardens with a tuber from the Eastern Cape, which surprised everyone with its beautiful flowers that appeared the following year. The plant is known to grow in harsh conditions with sparse rainfall, prone to fire and harsh winters, and is often found alongside other plants with similar adaptations. It has also been observed in the sands of the mid-Kalahari by Franz Seiner.
