Ipomoea lobata, also known as fire vine, firecracker vine, or Spanish flag, is a flowering plant native to Mexico and Brazil. It can grow up to 5 meters tall and is often grown as an annual in temperate regions. Its leaves are toothed and lobed, and it produces one-sided racemes of flowers that start off red and fade to yellow, cream, and white. This color gradient gives it the appearance of a firework, hence its popular name "firecracker vine". It is also called Spanish flag due to its resemblance to the red and gold of Spain's national flag. This plant requires a minimum temperature of 5°C and a warm, sheltered spot in full sun. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is closely related to two other popular climbing plants, Ipomoea indica and Ipomoea tricolor. It should not be confused with Lantana camara, another plant also known as Spanish flag.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment. |
Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper. |
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water. |
