Cuscuta japonica, also known as Japanese dodder, is a parasitic vine that has been classified as a noxious weed by the State of California. It can have a range of effects on its host, from mild development issues to serious complications that can lead to death. This plant is difficult to distinguish from other vines, making it a challenge to control. It has a yellow stem with red accents, small pale-yellow flowers, and small scale-like leaves. The fruit it produces is small and contains only a few seeds. Originating from Asia, C. japonica has been repeatedly introduced to the United States since the 1940s, often under the guise of a medicinal plant. Despite efforts to eradicate it, the plant continues to thrive in various areas. Farmers are particularly affected by this invasive species, as it can significantly reduce crop yields.
