Parrotia persica, also known as the Persian ironwood, is a deciduous tree in the Hamamelidaceae family, closely related to the witch-hazel genus Hamamelis. It is native to Iran's Caspian region and Iranian Azerbaijan, and is found mainly in Golestan National Park in the Alborz mountains. The species was named after German naturalist Georg Friedrich Parrot by Carl Anton von Meyer. Another species, Parrotia subaequalis, is found in eastern China and is critically endangered with only five known populations. Parrotia persica is a popular ornamental tree due to its fast growth, striking autumn colors, and unique bark. Several cultivars have been selected for garden planting, including 'Vanessa' which has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Fossil records have shown that Parrotia has existed since the middle Miocene in Austria, suggesting a subtropical climate at that time.
