Ribes menziesii, commonly known as the canyon gooseberry, is a species of currant found in California and Oregon. It is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 2 metres (6.6 ft) in height and has prickly branches. Its showy hanging flowers have fuchsia or purple sepals and white petals. The plant fruits purple gooseberries which are edible but are mainly seeds with little fruit. There are five to six varieties of the species found across the low elevation mountains of California and the coastal canyons and foothills, into southern Oregon. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant for native plant and wildlife gardens.
