Ribes aureum, also known as golden currant, clove currant, pruterberry, and buffalo currant, is a deciduous shrub native to North America. It grows up to 3 meters tall and has green, semi-leathery leaves with 3 or 5 lobes that turn red in autumn. In spring, it produces clusters of golden yellow flowers with a spicy fragrance similar to cloves or vanilla. The shrub also bears small berries that ripen from amber yellow to black. There are three varieties of this species, with one being native to the western US and the other two naturalized in the eastern US. Ribes aureum is commonly found in gravel banks and plains near flowing water. It is an important food source for pollinators and various birds and mammals. However, it is susceptible to a fungus that can kill pine trees, so it is sometimes removed from forested areas. This shrub is widely cultivated for its ornamental value and is drought-tolerant. Its fruits are edible, but are usually cooked with sugar to make jelly. The flowers are also edible. Native American groups have traditionally used different parts of the plant for food and medicine.
