The leaves are edible and can be used in salads.
Ribes americanum is a North American species of flowering plant in the gooseberry family known as wild black currant, American black currant, and eastern black currant. It is widespread in much of Canada and the northern United States, and has also been introduced to northern China. It is a shrub growing 0.5 to 1.5 meters (20-60 inches) in height, with deciduous leaves, no spines, and white or greenish sepals. The fruit is a smooth rounded black berry about a centimeter (0.4 inch) wide and edible when cooked. It is found in a variety of ecosystems, including forests, conifer bogs, marshes, sedge meadows, plains, and mountains. Several bee species visit the flowers and it is an alternate host for the white pine blister rust. Native Americans used the berries to make pemmican, and the leaves are edible and can be used in salads.
