The genus Pometia (authority J.R.Forst. & G.Forst.) belongs to Sapindaceae and comprises approximately six species, all evergreen trees distributed from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through mainland Southeast Asia to Malesia and the western Pacific. It is usually circumscribed to include Pometia pinnata, recognized as the type species in standard treatments (Flora Malesiana; POWO, 2024). The leaves are large, alternate, and pinnate, often with a winged rachis, the leaflets glabrous or with simple indumentum, and stipules, though present on innovations, are caducous. Inflorescences are axillary or terminal panicles bearing numerous small, unisexual flowers (often polygamo-dioecious) with five sepals and five petals, a prominent disc, and typically eight stamens; the ovary is superior and bicarpellate, the placentation axile, and the fruits are ellipsoid drupes with a single seed bearing ruminated endosperm (Flora Malesiana; APG IV, 2016).

Diversity is highest in New Guinea, with notable endemism in the Moluccas and the Pacific (New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji), where Pometia often occupies floodplains, river margins, and lowland tropical rainforest up to mid-elevations. Taxonomically, the genus has remained fairly stable since it was last revised by van der Burgh in the 1970s (Flora Malesiana; van der Burgh, 1973), with about six species recognized, but ongoing molecular work continues to refine limits and relationships within Sapindaceae (Buerki et al., 2009; APG IV, 2016). Minor taxonomic adjustments have been proposed, and some authors have offered alternative sectional treatments, but a robust consensus on subgeneric categories has yet to emerge (Buerki et al., 2009; USDA, 2023). The base chromosome number is typically reported as n = 20 in Sapindaceae, but exact counts for Pometia are inconsistently documented in the literature and thus are not cited here.

The main species, Pometia pinnata, is a valued timber and fruit tree in Southeast Asia (locally “matoa”) and is widely planted for its sweet fruit and valuable wood; secondary species are less frequently used but locally exploited (Flora Malesiana). Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss across much of its range; although many populations are fragmented, at least the most widespread species remain comparatively secure at present (IUCN global assessment; FAO, 2020). Further field-based inventories, combined with targeted phylogenetic and taxonomic studies, will be essential to clarify species boundaries and guide conservation planning.
