Litchi (authority Sonn.) is a monotypic genus of the soapberry family Sapindaceae comprising a single species, Litchi chinensis. It is native to southern China, northern Vietnam and the Philippines, and is now cultivated across tropical and subtropical Asia, parts of Africa, the Caribbean and South America. The type species is L.chinensis, universally accepted as the name for the cultivated lychee fruit (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).

The tree is evergreen, reaching 10–30 m, with alternately arranged, pinnate leaves bearing five to nine leathery, glabrous leaflets; the rachis may be sparsely pubescent. Inflorescences are large, terminal panicles bearing numerous small, five‑petaled flowers that possess a conspicuous hypogynous disc. The ovary is superior, typically trilocular with a single basal ovule per locule, and the fruit is a fleshy drupe about 2–4 cm across, turning bright red when mature and containing a single, large, exalbuminous seed.

Although the genus contains only one species, extensive cultivar diversity exists, especially in Guangdong and Hainan (China) where dozens of named forms such as “Mauritius” and “Wai Chee” are grown (Liu et al., 2022). Wild populations persist in fragmented pockets of the native range; cultivated trees have escaped in parts of southern India and Madagascar, but these do not form invasive populations. The centre of diversity remains the Sino‑Vietnamese region, with secondary diversity in the Philippines.

Pollination is primarily entomophilous, mediated by a range of bees and flies that visit the nectar‑producing panicles (Harrison et al., 2020). Fruits are consumed by birds and mammals, facilitating seed dispersal; human movement of germplasm has further expanded the cultivated range. Chromosome studies report 2n = 16 for L.chinensis, indicating a base number x = 8 (Buerki et al., 2009).

Molecular phylogenies consistently place Litchi in subfamily Sapindoideae, sister to the Asian Pseudonephelium clade (Harrison et al., 2020). No formal subgenera or sections are recognized; the genus is monotypic in all modern treatments. Some historical accounts synonymized it under Sapindus (e.g., older floras), but current consensus, reflected in POWO and WFO, retains Litchi as distinct. A limited number of taxonomists treat the Philippine populations as a subspecies (L.chinensis subsp. philippinensis), while others maintain L.philippinensis as a separate species, reflecting minor morphological differences (Liu et al., 2022).

L.chinensis is economically important as a horticultural fruit crop and as an ornamental tree in subtropical gardens; its wood is occasionally used for small items, but the tree is not a timber source. It is not noted as a serious weed.

Wild populations face habitat loss and overharvesting, and many are listed as vulnerable in national Red‑data books. Ex situ collections and breeding programmes aim to preserve genetic diversity. Ongoing research on genomics and climate resilience will be essential for future cultivation under changing environmental conditions (POWO, 2024).
