Suggest a correction!Harpullia (Roxb.) is a tropical genus in Sapindaceae comprising approximately 31–34 accepted species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), widely distributed from South Asia and Southeast Asia through Malesia to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, northeastern Australia, and Fiji (Buijsen, 1988). The type species is H. cupanioides (Radlkofer, 1931–1933). Plants are medium to large trees bearing alternate, paripinnate leaves with usually entire leaflets; terminal buds are often covered by a sheath of fused stipules, and vegetative parts are typically glabrous. Inflorescences are axillary thyrses; flowers are small with 4–5 sepals, 4–5 imbricate petals, a well-developed nectariferous disc, and a 2(–3)-locular ovary. Fruits are loculicidal capsules with 2(–3) wings that may be broad or reduced, each locule containing a seed enclosed by a conspicuous aril; seeds are brown and glossy (Buijsen, 1988; van der Ham et al., 2014).
The center of species richness lies in New Guinea and adjacent islands, with additional diversity in Malesia; several taxa are regionally endemic (e.g., New Guinea, Australia, and Fiji). Most species occur in lowland to lower-montane rainforest up to about 1500 m, in various substrates from limestone to alluvial soils (Buijsen, 1988). Some variation in capsule shape, wing development, and leaflet number exists among species, but consistent morphological synapomorphies remain unavailable, rendering species boundaries partly provisional pending molecular study (Buijsen, 1988).
Pollination is inferred as entomophilous based on flower morphology, while dispersal appears biotic, likely avian, given arillate seeds and the occurrence of H. pendula in bird-dispersed systems (Buijsen, 1988). The base chromosome number is x=14, documented across Sapindaceae (van der Ham et al., 2014). Growth is typically fast under nursery conditions, and mature trees develop well-developed buttresses in several taxa (Buijsen, 1988).
Taxonomically, Harpullia has been treated as a distinct genus since Radlkofer’s comprehensive revision and remains so in contemporary checklists (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Intergeneric relationships among Sapindaceae, and consequently sectional treatments within Harpullia, have shifted with modern phylogenetics, but current consensus places it within the亚科 Harpullieae—a lineage redefined by recent studies (Harrington et al., 2005; Buerki et al., 2009). Species boundaries remain dynamic; for example, H. densiflora has often been linked to H. ramiflora, but this synonymy is not uniformly accepted (Buijsen, 1988; POWO, 2024).
Several species are widely cultivated ornamentals (e.g., H. pendula) for their graceful form and attractive winged capsules, while H. arborea and related taxa provide timber in parts of Asia. No species are prominent invasive weeds in native ranges. Conservation outlook is cautiously positive but uneven across taxa; many species lack targeted Red List assessments, and habitat loss within their typically lowland forest habitats remains the primary concern.
