Zanthoxylum pilosulum, also known as Chinese pepper, is a woody plant found in western and northwestern regions of China. It grows as a shrub with strong, straight branches covered in hairs and spines. The leaves have 7-11 small leaflets and are pale green with visible veins. The flowers have 5-8 tepals and the fruit is purple-red with occasional oil glands. It grows in dry mountain areas at high altitudes and blooms from April to May, with fruits appearing in July to August. It is distinguishable from its relative, Zanthoxylum piasezkii, by the presence of oil glands in the leaf margins.
