Zanthoxylum kwangsiense is a woody plant that belongs to the Rutaceae family and is native to northwestern Guangxi, Guizhou, and Sichuan provinces in China. It is a climbing vine with thornless upper branches and densely pubescent young branches, leaf shafts, and inflorescence shafts. The leaves have 5-9 leaflets that are irregularly opposite or alternate, lanceolate or ovate in shape, and have a wide wedge-shaped base. The leaf margin has fine round cracked teeth and oil spots. The plant produces axillary and terminal cymes, with an infructescence of 2-15 cm long. The seeds are nearly spherical and contain alkaloids, furfuraldehyde, and cuspidiol. Zanthoxylum kwangsiense is typically found in sloping bushes or under sparse forests at an altitude of 600-700 meters. The root of this plant has a soft cork layer and a sulfur-yellow powdery substance that is very bitter and numbing.
