Zanthoxylum capense, also known as the small knobwood, is a species of plant in the Rutaceae family. It is found in the eastern regions of southern Africa, from Western Cape to Zimbabwe and coastal Mozambique. This plant can tolerate a variety of altitudes, but is most commonly found in dry thickets or on rocky slopes and outcrops. The trunks of these plants are bare except for numerous conical knobs that end in a spine. They have clusters of compound leaves and their leaves and fruit have a citrus scent. The fruit are small capsules covered in glands that release a single black, oil-rich seed when ripe. This plant is a host for several butterfly species. Similar species include Zanthoxylum davyi, which is found in mist belt regions, and Zanthoxylum leprieurii, which is found in subtropical lowland sand forests.
