Genus Didymocheton in Family Meliaceae

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Didymocheton Blume (Meliaceae) was erected in the early nineteenth‑century Dutch flora (Blume 1825). Modern checklists treat it as a synonym of the far‑larger genus Dysoxylum (POWO 2024; WFO 2024), so no accepted species remain under Didymocheton. Historically the name comprised a handful of small‑to‑medium trees from Malesian rainforests, distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra and the Philippines.
Blume’s original diagnosis emphasized characters that are typical of the tribe Swietenieae: trees with imparipinnate leaves, axillary stipules, small five‑parted flowers arranged in paniculate inflorescences, a superior ovary with axile placentation, and a capsular fruit (Mabberley 2008). These traits match the generic circumscription of Dysoxylum and consequently provide the sole morphological basis for the name.
Species diversity is therefore limited to the few taxa that have ever been placed in Didymocheton; current treatments merge them into Dysoxylum (Muellner et al., 2006). The group occurs in lowland tropical rainforest, occasionally reaching lower montane forest up to about 800 m. Centers of endemism coincide with the high rainfall areas of Borneo and the Philippines.
No dedicated studies on pollination or seed dispersal exist for Didymocheton; the presumed vectors are generic for Meliaceae (insect‑mediated pollination, animal‑mediated fruit‐caching). Base chromosome numbers have not been reported.
Taxonomically Didymocheton occupies a well‑supported position within the Dysoxylum clade, as demonstrated by molecular phylogenies of the family (Muellner et al., 2006). Pennington et al. (1995) occasionally treated it as a section of Dysoxylum, but contemporary databases (POWO 2024; WFO 2024) treat the name as a nomenclatural synonym, reflecting the consensus view.
Human relevance is modest: the wood of former Didymocheton taxa was harvested locally for light construction and furniture, but the group never achieved major horticultural or agricultural importance and poses no invasive threat.
Conservation attention focuses on the species now assigned to Dysoxylum; many are threatened by habitat loss. Continued examination of historical specimens is needed to clarify the precise taxonomic limits of the former Didymocheton material.
