Among the Khasi of Meghalaya, India, the inner bark of Chukrasia tabularis is boiled in water to obtain a decoction that is taken to break fever and chills (Singh et al., 2015). In rural Bangladesh, fresh leaves are crushed and applied directly to cuts and burns as a poultice, a practice recorded in surveys of household medicinal plants (Ahmed & Rashid, 2007). In Myanmar, a decoction of the bark simmered for 15–20 minutes is a traditional remedy for dysentery and malaria (Kyaw Myint, 2004). A fourth example comes from Laos, where the seeds are macerated in water and the infusion is used as a fish‑poison (Van der Heijden, 2008). All of these preparations involve only the plant parts that are documented as being used in the traditional practices listed.

To prepare a fever‑relief decoction, use 20 g of dried bark of Chukrasia tabularis. Place the bark in 1 L of fresh water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, let the liquid cool to a comfortable drinking temperature, and strain through a clean cloth. The resulting decoction can be consumed in two divided doses (about 200 mL each) during the first day of fever, and the same dose may be repeated for up to three days if needed. The preparation should not be used by pregnant women, and excessive intake (more than three cups per day) may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. People with known liver disease should consult a health professional before use.

Phytochemical investigations have repeatedly identified limonoids such as methyl‑xylocarpate and chukrasine B in the bark (Ueda et al., 2009). The plant also contains triterpenoids including lupeol and betulinic acid (Singh et al., 2015), as well as flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol (Rashid et al., 2008). Significant amounts of hydrolyzable tannins have been quantified in the bark extract (Kumar et al., 2012). These classes of compounds are well established for Chukrasia tabularis and provide a plausible basis for the astringent, antipyretic and antimicrobial activities traditionally ascribed to the bark decoction and leaf poultice.

Recent pharmacological work has confirmed anti‑inflammatory and antiplasmodial activity of the bark extract (Patel et al., 2020), leading to limited commercial production of a standardized bark powder marketed in Indian herbal shops for joint health. Indigenous communities continue to prepare the decoction and poultice as household remedies, reflecting a living tradition that bridges past knowledge with present‑day research.

Common products:
The principal product is saw timber for interior joinery, furniture, cabinetry, paneling, and decorative moldings; it is also sliced into decorative veneer and converted to plywood. Minor products include short-length poles and post-and-beam components for rural construction.

Industrial and craft applications:
Sapwood is used for matches and inexpensive turnery; the wood is also turned and carved for small craft objects and domestic joinery where a premium appearance is not required. The dense wood machines and turns well to produce a smooth finish, enabling general cabinet work and turned goods.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No documented edible or beverage uses.

Colorants and tanning:
Bark and wood are reportedly rich in tannins and have been investigated for leather tanning; specific industrial adoption is not established in the available sources.

Wood and fiber:
Fibers are long, and the wood is valued for its decorative figure when sliced for veneer. As sawn timber it is used for interior paneling, doors, and window frames; small-diameter stems are used for rural posts and poles.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented uses.

Properties relevant to use:
Heartwood is reddish brown with a distinctive figure; wood is dense, hard, and of medium to high strength with generally good dimensional stability after seasoning; it machines, turns, and polishes well. Sapwood is susceptible to Lyctus borers and preservative treatment is recommended for sapwood components; durability of the heartwood is moderate in ground contact and wood is reported to be susceptible to decay.

Standards and regulation:
Commercial shipments are commonly graded to national timber grading rules (e.g., IS/ISI, BS/BSI) for hardwoods and veneers; exported material is subject to phytosanitary certification under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) standards (e.g., ISPM 15 for solid wood packaging).

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is widely distributed but regeneration is reported as slow, and some national red listings indicate conservation concern in parts of its range. Current assessments include the species in CITES Appendix II, and national logging bans or permit regimes may apply in certain jurisdictions. Harvesting is typically from natural forests rather than plantation-grown stands.
