Boswellia nana is a unique plant species found only on the Yemeni island of Socotra. These small trees or shrubs have a distinct appearance, often growing in a bent or nearly horizontal manner. They thrive in arid, partly deciduous forest areas on limestone escarpments at altitudes between 300 and 550 meters. This species is only found in two populations, covering an area of less than 20 square kilometers in the northeastern part of the island. There is evidence that Boswellia nana may be a natural hybrid between B. socotrana and another unknown Boswellia species, as seen in a solitary tree displaying characteristics of both B. nana and B. socotrana. This tree grows in an area that shares qualities of both species' habitats, leading botanists to believe that B. nana is a smaller form of Boswellia popoviana.
