Suggest a correction!Common products:
Aucoumea klaineana (okoume) is primarily processed into fine, rotary-cut veneers and used as the face or core stock for lightweight interior plywood. It is widely employed as face veneer in film-faced shuttering plywood and as decorative veneer for cabinetry, millwork, and paneling. The wood is also sliced into decorative veneer for furniture and interior joinery.
Industrial and craft applications:
Okoume is used in non-structural components of aircraft interiors (e.g., partitions, trim, and door skins) and in non-structural boat interiors, taking advantage of its low density, ease of machining, and good gluing and finishing. Its workability and smooth surface make it suitable for millwork, model making, and general carpentry. It is typically used as plywood for interior paneling and interior doors.
Properties relevant to use:
Okoume’s low density and relatively low strength-to-weight ratio underpin its use in lightweight interior components. The wood is straight- to interlocked-grained, fine-textured, and light pinkish brown to straw-colored, which supports its widespread use as decorative and utility veneer. The species machines, planes, turns, and sands well, and takes nails, screws, and adhesives reliably, facilitating fabrication of plywood and millwork. The relatively light coloration of the veneer is valued in decorative applications. Natural durability is low, so exterior or high-moisture applications are typically avoided without appropriate protection or preservative treatment. The heartwood contains extractives that can affect bonding and finishing if the surface is not properly prepared, which is managed in industrial processing.
