Schinopsis balansae, also known as willow-leaf red quebracho, is a hardwood tree found in the subtropical Humid Chaco ecoregion of Argentina and Paraguay, as well as in the Pantanal region of Brazil. It is often confused with another species in the same genus, S. heterophylla. This tree can grow up to 24 meters tall and has a straight trunk with a brownish-gray bark. Its wood is very heavy and is primarily used for extracting quebracho extract, which is 63% pure tannin. In 1956, it was declared Argentina's "National Forest Tree." The tree's heartwood also contains leuco-fisetinidin, a flavan-3,4-diol that is used in the production of condensed tannins.
