Rhus lanceolata, also known as prairie sumac, is a plant species found in the south-western United States and northern Mexico. It can grow up to 9 meters tall and reproduces through underground rhizomes. Its leaves are pinnately compound with 13-17 leaflets and have a shiny green upper surface and a whitish, pubescent lower surface. The plant produces white to greenish flowers in a panicle and dark red, hairy fruits. Birds and deer feed on the fruit and foliage, respectively, and the leaves have been used to tan leather due to their tannin content.
