Coula edulis is a tree native to tropical western Africa, specifically in countries such as Sierra Leone, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It can thrive in tropical regions and can be found in both the top canopy and lower story of forests. The tree produces greenish yellow flowers and ellipsoidal drupe nuts, which are available from August to January. These nuts, also known as Gabon nuts or African walnuts, are not related to the walnut but are named for their resemblance. Every part of the tree is used, with the bark being used for medicinal purposes and the wood for construction. The nuts, which are 50% fat and have a mild flavor, can be boiled, roasted, or fermented and are a popular food item for both humans and chimpanzees. However, their tough shell requires the use of a rock to open.
