It is also an important food source for nectar-feeding birds, such as honeyeaters, and provides shelter and nesting sites for various bird species.
Amyema gaudichaudii, also known as melaleuca mistletoe, is a shrubby, woody plant found in eastern Australia. It belongs to the family Loranthaceae and is a hemiparasite, meaning it obtains some of its nutrients from its host plant. It has small, wedge-shaped leaves and dark red flowers arranged in groups of three. This mistletoe only grows on a few species of Melaleuca. It was first described in 1830 by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle and was later renamed by Philippe Édouard Léon Van Tieghem in 1895. It is found in forest and swamp woodland habitats, mainly on M. decora and M. bracteata. It is an important food source for caterpillars and nectar-feeding birds, and also provides shelter and nesting sites for various bird species. It is found in two separate populations in Queensland and New South Wales.
