Ulmus mexicana, also known as the Mexican elm, is a large tree native to Mexico and Central America. It is typically found in cloud forests and higher elevations with high levels of precipitation. The tree was first described in 1873 and is known for its tall height and distinctive grey trunk. Its leaves vary in size and shape and it produces small wind-pollinated flowers and samarae fruits. While the tree is not commonly used in the timber trade due to its difficult drying process and high silica content, it is occasionally planted for shade and ornamental purposes. In Costa Rica, it is known as Tirrá and has a neighborhood named after it.
