Rubus hispidus, also known as swamp dewberry, is a North American species of dewberry that belongs to the rose family. It can be found in moist or dry soils, ditches, and open woods in central and eastern parts of North America. This small shrub has red twigs with bristles and produces small clusters of white flowers with five petals. Its dark purple to black berries are eaten by birds and mammals and can be used to create a dull blue dye or as an astringent. However, due to their bitter taste, they are not commonly used for culinary purposes.
