Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, a decoction of fresh leaves is drunk to treat diarrhea and topically applied to wounds (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Aran Valley of the western Pyrenees, infusions of leaves serve as a gentle febrifuge and a soothing diuretic tonic (Valles et al., 2004). Traditional healers in the Southern Carpathians brew leaf infusions for gastric upset and mild cough, and a leaf poultice is pressed onto bruises and skin lesions; Păcală-Mocanu’s 1957 monograph on Transylvanian herbs records the practice (Păcală-Mocanu, 1957). In the villages of northern Romania, a fresh leaf infusion is taken for heavy colds and colic, while elders crush leaves and bind them to superficial wounds (Mânzat, 1977). Across northern Iberia, leaf infusions are valued as a digestive aid and for feverish colds (Tardío et al., 2006).

As a simple leaf tea, simmer one to two heaped teaspoons (2–3 g) of air‑dried leaves in 250 ml of water for 3–5 minutes, strain, and drink up to three cups daily (Bennett et al., 2021). To make a 1:5 ethanol tincture, measure 20 g of dried leaves, add 100 ml of 45–50% alcohol, macerate in a dark bottle for 2–3 weeks with daily shaking, then strain and press; adults take 2–3 ml diluted in water three times daily (Pieroni & Giusti, 2009; Tardío et al., 2006). Limit topical use to clean, intact skin; avoid if you are pregnant or nursing (Mânzat, 1977).

The leaves contain ellagitannins and flavonol glycosides; the ellagitannins undergo hydrolysis to ellagic acid, and the flavonoids are represented by quercetin and kaempferol glycosides (Okwu & Okwu, 2004; Gruenwald et al., 2000). These well‑established phytochemicals support the astringent and anti‑inflammatory actions reported in the preparations.

Commercial products remain uncommon, but a few European herbal suppliers carry dried leaf material, and recent work on anti‑microbial activity of Rubus leaf extracts continues to validate traditional applications.
