In the Alpine valleys of northern Italy a decoction of the dried hips of Rosa rubiginosa has long been taken for coughs, colds and to promote urinary health; the practice is recorded by Pignatti in Flora d’Italia (1982). In the Alentejo countryside of Portugal, women traditionally prepare a mild infusion of fresh leaves, steeping a handful of leaves in hot water for five minutes to aid digestion and act as a gentle diuretic, a use documented by Silva & Neto (2018). In the Carpathian foothills of Romania a fresh leaf poultice is still pressed onto minor wounds and skin irritations; the method appears in Cretu et al. (2020). In the United Kingdom the dried hips are simmered in a cup of water for a short tea that supplies vitamin C and soothes sore throats, a home remedy that survives in Grieve’s Modern Herbal (1931) and in the contemporary Plants for a Future database (2022).
A simple, widely used preparation is a rose‑hip tea: place 2 g (about a heaping teaspoon) of dried, crushed hips into a pot, pour 250 ml of just‑boiled water over them, cover and steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. The resulting infusion is taken warm, one to three times daily, and can be sweetened with honey if desired. Because the hips are rich in ascorbic acid, most people find the beverage safe, but those with a history of oxalate‑containing kidney stones should avoid very large amounts and pregnant women are advised to limit intake to no more than a single cup per day.
The therapeutic profile of Rosa rubiginosa reflects well‑known phytochemicals that are abundant in rose hips and leaves. The hips are a potent source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and of flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol; they also contain anthocyanins (cyanidin‑3‑glucoside) and carotenoids like lycopene and β‑carotene, along with phenolic acids (gallic acid) and tannins. These constituents together confer antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory and mild diuretic actions that are consistent with the traditional uses described above.
Modern research continues to investigate the antioxidant capacity of rose‑hip extracts, and commercial rose‑hip teas are now sold in health‑food stores across Europe. At the same time, rural collectors in Italy, Portugal and Romania still gather the plant for local remedies, keeping the ethnobotanical knowledge of Rosa rubiginosa alive.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The hips of Rosa rubiginosa are processed into jams, jellies, syrups, sauces, and beverages. The petals yield an essential oil used in perfumery and as a flavoring. Commercially, the hips are sometimes referred to as rosehips (bramble-rose hips).
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Hip fruits are used to produce jams, jellies, syrups, and sauces; rosehip syrups are a recognized commercial product category in some markets. The hips can also be fermented to beverages such as wines and liqueurs. Petal essential oil is used as a flavoring in selected food applications.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Petals yield essential oil used in perfumery; the oil is also used as a fragrance component in cosmetics and toiletries. Non-medicinal cosmetic and personal-care preparations may contain rose oil or petal extracts as fragrance ingredients.
Properties relevant to use:
Sweetbrier essential oil is dominated by citronellol, geraniol, and nerol, constituents typical of rose oils that confer a characteristic floral aroma. The hips contain pectin and sugars suitable for jams and syrups, and the total soluble solids and acidity values align with standard fruit-processing specifications.
Standards and regulation:
Food products made from rosehips (e.g., jams, jellies, syrups) are subject to national food standards for composition, contaminants, and labeling, as applicable to processed fruit products. Essential oil intended as a fragrance or flavor ingredient complies with international fragrance and flavor standards such as IFRA and ISO recommendations for rose oils.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Rosa rubiginosa is cultivated for ornamental purposes in temperate regions; hips are harvested from garden plantings and hedgerows. Because the species can naturalize, sourcing programs emphasize selective harvesting to minimize ecological impact. Sustainability considerations include avoiding overharvesting of wild plants and maintaining habitat for pollinators that also forage on the flowers.
