### Ethnobotanical Uses
Traditional drinks from Rosa cinnamomea—recorded as a cinnamon‑scented rose with pale pink blooms—are prepared from both hips and dried buds. Among the Sami of northern Scandinavia, cool infusions or mild decoctions of the hips were taken for fevers and colds (Leonti et al., 2009). In western Siberia, Buryat and Khanty peoples steeped dried hips as a hot or cold drink for coughs and diarrhea, while in Chile’s temperate zones, Mapuche communities made infusions of dried buds for throat and digestive complaints (Bennett et al., 2021; Penso, 1983). In European “Russian‑type” herbal practice the same parts were taken as tonics for colds and to ease respiratory irritation (Hoffmann, 1994).
One practical way to prepare a gentle tea is to place about 1–2 teaspoons (1–3 g) of dried hips or buds in a cup, pour over about 200–250 mL of near‑boiling water, cover, and steep 10–15 minutes. If a decoction is preferred, simmer the hips in water for 10 minutes, then strain and cool briefly before drinking. Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. For a standard 1:5 (w/v) tincture, macerate 100 g of chopped hips in 500 mL of 45% ethanol for 3–4 weeks in a dark jar, shaking daily, then strain and press. Do not exceed 1–2 teaspoons (5–10 mL) of the tincture per day. Rose infusions are generally well tolerated, but avoid very large doses and do not use during pregnancy unless advised by a professional (Penso, 1983).
The traditional actions are associated with well‑known constituents of the hips—vitamin C, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and ellagitannins like rugosin D—along with essential oils in the buds and leaves that include geraniol and citronellol, which plausibly support the observed respiratory and digestive relief. These compounds provide astringent, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial activity that is consistent with historic beverage use.
Modern relevance: Rose hip preparations remain widely available as beverages and nutritional supplements, while rosebud infusions continue in household practice in parts of the former USSR and northern Europe (Hoffmann, 1994).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Hips are processed into preserves, syrups, and sauces in parts of northern and eastern Europe. Hips and seeds yield an edible oil used in food applications. Flowers are the source of essential oil used in perfumery.
Industrial and craft applications:
As a small shrub, it provides limited timber; branches are used as fuel and in small craft or handle applications. No major industrial non-medicinal uses are documented.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Hips are used to make jams, jellies, syrups, sauces, liqueurs, and non-medicinal beverages. Rosehip syrup is a common food ingredient and flavoring. Processed hip pulp is used as a jam base. Seed oil is edible and used for cooking; published analyses show high linoleic acid content (approximately 50–60%) and significant vitamin E compounds.
Colorants and tanning:
Leaves and bark contain hydrolysable tannins historically used in small-scale vegetable tanning and as brown colorants for protein fibers (e.g., wool and silk).
Wood and fiber:
Softwood-like branches are employed in small craft work and as fuel. No established fiber (e.g., bast) or large-scale timber uses are reported.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Flowers yield essential oil used in perfumery. The oil profile includes citronellol, geraniol, nerol, and phenylethyl alcohol; it is employed as a fragrance component in soaps, lotions, and cosmetics. The seed oil is used in cosmetic formulations for its high polyunsaturated fatty acid content and vitamin E.
Properties relevant to use:
Rosehip seed oil is notable for its high linoleic acid content and presence of tocopherols. Flower essential oil contains monoterpenes and phenylpropanoids that confer characteristic rose scent and solubility suitable for fragrance applications. The hydrolysable tannins in hips and leaves provide brown dye capability and tanning potential.
Scientific/model-organism use:
R. cinnamomea sensu L. is a synonym of R. majalis and serves as a taxonomic reference in global rosaceous databases (GRIN, IPNI, The Plant List). It is studied for winter hardiness genetics and ecological modeling in northern Eurasia. General rose community resources (e.g., community germplasm information networks, genomic repositories, and phenotyping protocols) are relevant to this taxon.
Standards and regulation:
Edible and cosmetic uses of rose-derived products are governed by national and EU food and cosmetic safety legislation; specific ISO/ASTM/EN standards for rosehip oil or essential oil quality were not identified for this taxon.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Most supply is wild-collected in boreal and montane habitats; overharvesting can threaten local populations. Sustainable collection is achieved through selective picking, quota systems, and habitat protection measures in northern and eastern Europe.

Suggest a correction or add new data!| Alternate between 20°C and 4°C for 3 months each, across multiple cycles, acknowledging that germination may be prolonged. |
| Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve. |
