It is a perennial herb with a thick caudex and taproot, and is native to North America. It can grow up to half a meter tall and has leaves that can be hairless, hairy, or woolly. The fruit of this plant is a tiny achene and it is known to hybridize with other cinquefoil species. It can be found in a variety of habitats and is often found alongside other plant species such as prairie junegrass and western yarrow. This species was named after Charles Friedrich Hipp by botanist Johann Georg Christian Lehmann.
