Alphitonia ponderosa is a flowering tree endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, also known as kauila. It can reach heights of 15-24 meters and has ovate leaves with rust-colored veins on the bottom. The flowers are polygamous and form cymes, while the fruit is a 15-millimeter drupe containing two to three seeds. It grows in dry, coastal, and mixed mesic forests and is highly prized for its wood, which was used by Native Hawaiians for various tools and carvings. However, the species is considered vulnerable due to threats such as habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and wildfire.
