Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Treculia (Decne. ex Trécul) is a genus in the mulberry family (Moraceae). About six to eight species are currently accepted (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), ranging across tropical Africa from West to East Africa in lowland rainforest, riverine forest and swamp margins (Berg, 2005). The type species, Treculia africana, was designated by Decaisne (POWO, 2024).
The trees are large evergreens bearing milky latex; leaves are alternate, simple, entire or shallowly lobed, with large caducous stipules that often leave a scar on the twig (Berg, 2005). Inflorescences are pendulous, densely capitate heads that contain numerous minute unisexual flowers; male and female flowers are interspersed within the same head, a feature that distinguishes Treculia from other Moraceae (Datwyler & Weiblen, 2004). The ovary is superior and the fruit is a multiple syncarp that expands into a fleshy, bread‑fruit‑like structure bearing many small, hard‑coated seeds.
The greatest species richness is in the Congo Basin and the Upper Guinean forests, with several endemics confined to the Cameroon Highlands and the Albertine Rift (WFO, 2024). Species occupy lowland rainforest up to about 1,000 m a.s.l., and some persist in secondary or logged forest.
Pollination is thought to be by small beetles or flies, while the large, fleshy fruits are consumed by frugivorous birds and primates, and the seeds can also be dispersed by water in flood‑plain habitats (Berg, 2005). Chromosome counts for T. africana have reported 2n = 28, indicating a base number of x = 14 (Schnabel, 1981).
Molecular phylogenies place Treculia in tribe Dorony as sister to Artocarpus and allied with Musanga (Datwyler & Weiblen, 2004). Berg (2005) placed the genus in subfamily Artocarpoideae, a view later reinforced by additional molecular data. Recent revisions synonymise several narrow taxa with T. africana, retaining T. le‑testui and T. glabrifolia (POWO, 2024). An earlier treatment regarded the group as a single polymorphic species, but molecular and morphological data support multiple species (Berg, 2005).
In West Africa, T. africana is cultivated for its edible fruit and used as a shade tree in agroforestry; the wood is employed locally for light construction and fuel (Berg, 2005). The genus is not considered invasive.
Habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural conversion threatens several narrowly endemic taxa, and several are listed as Near‑Threatened in regional red‑lists (WFO, 2024). Continued taxonomic clarification and ex‑situ conservation are needed to safeguard the genetic diversity of Treculia.
