Castilla elastica, also known as the Panama rubber tree, is a tree native to tropical regions in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. It was a major source of latex for the Mesoamerican people before the arrival of Europeans. The latex was converted into rubber by mixing it with the juice of a morning glory species that commonly grows on the tree. This rubber was used for various purposes, including making balls for the Mesoamerican ballgame. The Nahuatl word for rubber, ulli/olli, is also the origin of their word for the ballgame and their name for the Olmec people, who were associated with the game's origin. The tree is known as olicuáhuitl in Nahuatl and palo de hule in Spanish. There are two subspecies of Castilla elastica and it is also known by various vernacular names such as caucho and castilloa rubber.
