Elaeagnus multiflora, also known as cherry elaeagnus, is a deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree native to China, Korea, and Japan. It can grow up to 8 meters tall and has dark brown bark and red-brown shoots. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, green on top and silvery to orange-brown on the bottom. In mid-spring, the plant produces fragrant, pale yellowish-white flowers with four lobes. The fruit is a small, silvery-scaled orange drupe that ripens to red in mid to late summer. While edible, the fruit is difficult to transport and therefore not commonly used as a food crop. E. multiflora is able to grow in poor soils due to its symbiotic relationship with the bacteria Frankia, which fixes atmospheric nitrogen for the plant. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant and for its fruit in Europe and North America, but is considered an invasive species in parts of the eastern United States.

Sow seeds immediately as their viability decreases rapidly, or they best germinate when fresh. If stored, seeds might need temperature cycling and patience to germinate. |
