Elaeagnus latifolia, also known as the bastard oleaster or soh-sang, is an evergreen shrub native to India and Southeast Asia. It can grow up to ten feet tall and produces bright red and speckled berries with a sweet and slightly sour taste. This plant is widely distributed in Southeast Asia and the Himalayas, where it can thrive in both moist and dry conditions. It has a symbiotic relationship with soil-dwelling bacteria and its fruit contains "good" fatty acids, making it a potential candidate for cancer treatment. E. latifolia is mostly cultivated in well-drained and moderately fertile soils, and requires plenty of sunlight. It is also resistant to honey fungus and can be grown with orchards to increase fruit tree yield.
