Elaeagnus commutata, commonly called silverberry, has a well‑documented medicinal record in several Indigenous communities of North America. Among the Blackfoot of the northern plains, a gentle leaf infusion was taken for colds and coughs, and a decoction of the root was used for stomach upset (according to Moerman, 1998). In interior Alaska the Koyukon prepared a bark decoction to treat fever and gastrointestinal distress (according to Moerman, 1998). The Tlicho Dene of the Northwest Territories made a fresh‑leaf poultice that was applied to bruises and minor wounds (according to Moerman, 1998). All of these preparations involve the specific plant parts of leaves, bark, and roots.

One practical preparation that follows the Blackfoot leaf‑infusion tradition is a simple silver‑leaf tea. Place 2 g of finely chopped fresh leaves (about a small handful) into a teapot, pour 250 ml of water just off the boil, and let steep for 5–7 minutes before straining. The resulting infusion is mildly astringent with a subtle citrus note. Traditional practitioners recommend one to two cups per day, taken warm. A pinch of honey or a few drops of lemon juice can be added to enhance flavor, but these additions are optional. Because scientific safety data for pregnant or nursing individuals are lacking, pregnant women should avoid this tea, and anyone with a known allergy to Elaeagnus should discontinue use.

Phytochemical analyses of Elaeagnus commutata have repeatedly identified high levels of vitamin C in the berries, with up to about 70 mg per 100 g fresh weight (according to USDA FoodData Central, 2022). The leaves also contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, compounds that possess antioxidant and mild anti‑inflammatory properties (according to Bennett et al., 2021). The presence of these flavonoids contributes to the astringent quality of the infusion and plausibly accounts for the soothing and protective effects reported in the traditional preparations.

Recent work has quantified the antioxidant capacity of silverberry leaf extracts (Bennett et al., 2021), sparking modest commercial interest; a handful of regional health‑food companies now sell small‑batch silver‑leaf tea, while many Indigenous communities continue to harvest the plant for its traditional cold‑fighting infusions. Scientists are also investigating its potential as a natural food preservative due to the high antioxidant content.
