Celtis zenkeri is a large, fast-growing tree that is native to sub-Saharan Africa. It can reach heights of up to 30-50 meters and grows at a rate of 15 cm per year. Its trunk can grow up to 1 cm in diameter per year in Côte d’Ivoire. This species flowers during different times of the year in different countries, with a blooming period of February to April in Nigeria and March, August, and September in Ghana. It is found in various habitats, including deciduous and semi-deciduous forests, savanna woodlands, and rainforests, across western, central, and eastern Africa. The tree's seeds are dispersed by birds and primates, and it also serves as a host plant for the caterpillars of the Charaxes cithaeron butterfly species. With an estimated extent of occurrence of 8,542,025 km2, Celtis zenkeri plays an important role in the ecosystem of sub-Saharan Africa.
