Ranunculus adoneus, also known as the alpine buttercup or snow buttercup, is a flowering plant from the Ranunculaceae family. It is mainly found in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming, but can also be found in other states such as Idaho, Utah, and Nevada. This species typically grows in short grass meadows near melting snow. It was first described in 1863 by Asa Gray and is a long-lived perennial that blooms at the edge of melting snow. The flowers are yellow with 5 to 10 wedge-shaped petals and are larger than the leaves. The plant has a unique property called heliotropism, which allows the flowers to track the sun and attract insects for pollination. The seeds of this plant are dispersed mainly by gravity and the flowering time is controlled by the time of snowmelt.
