Aquilegia longissima, also known as the long-spur columbine, is a rare perennial herb found in northern Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and southern Arizona. It is distinguished from the shorter-spurred golden columbine by its extremely long spurs, reaching up to 16 cm in length, and narrow spatulate petals. The plant typically blooms in the fall after monsoon rains and can be found in shaded canyons near streams or on talus slopes. It is hypothesized that the giant sphinx moth is the most likely pollinator for this species, although other large hawkmoths may also play a role. Hybridization with other columbine species is common, resulting in populations with intermediate spur lengths. One such population can be found at Cattail Falls in Big Bend National Park, where plants with intermediate spur lengths bloom in the spring while long-spur columbines bloom in the fall.
