Aquilegia canadensis, also known as the Canadian or Canada columbine, is a perennial flowering plant native to eastern North America. It is prized for its red and yellow flowers and can be found in woodlands and rocky slopes. This plant readily hybridizes with other species in its genus. Its leaves are fern-like and its flowers bloom in late spring, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. It is a popular ornamental plant and is easily grown from seed. Native American tribes used various parts of the plant for medicinal purposes. However, it should be noted that it contains a poisonous compound. Aquilegia canadensis is also used as an indicator of wetland areas in the United States and Canada. It is classified as "facultative wetland," meaning it is usually found in wetlands but can also thrive in non-wetland areas.
