Suggest a correction!Meconopsis (Papaveraceae) is a small, herbaceous genus of Himalayan–Sino-Himalayan poppies; when conservatively circumscribed it comprises approximately 60–70 species, with the type being Meconopsis cambrica (traditional European application). The plants occur from the eastern Himalayas through the Hengduan Mountains to Yunnan and Sichuan, predominantly at alpine to subalpine elevations in meadows, snowbeds, rocky slopes, and krummholz, with a single outlier in western Europe. The iconic “blue poppy” of high-altitude gardens is derived chiefly from M. betonicifolia and M. grandis, reinforcing Meconopsis in popular horticulture. Morphologically, Meconopsis is characterized by a perennial, monocarpic or polycarpic habit, prominent radical leaves, minute caducous stipules, and often a well-developed indumentum of simple hairs on stems, leaves, and buds; flowers are solitary or in racemiform clusters with four, sometimes five petals and numerous stamens, the superior ovary is typically capped by a fused style with a discoid or lobed stigma, placentation is parietal, and the fruit is a dehiscent capsule, features distinguishing it from closely related Papaver, whose stigmas and capsules differ (Grey‑Wilson, 2000; Nilsson, 1984; APG IV, 2016).
Diversity peaks in the Hengduan region, with narrow endemics that exhibit pronounced edaphic specialization (calciphiles vs serpentine associates) and a pattern of in situ diversification linked to Pliocene–Pleistocene orogeny; a single species occurs in western Europe (the outlier M. cambrica). Pollination is largely unspecialized and short‑lived flowering suggests pollen and nectar feeding by flies, bees, and lepidopterans, although specific mechanisms remain poorly documented; seed dispersal appears primarily ballistic, though casual epizoochory is likely. Cytologically, the majority of counted taxa share a base number x=7, sometimes duplicated in polyploids (Fedorova, 1975). Phylogenetic studies place Meconopsis within Papaveroideae as sister to a clade comprising Papaver and Stylomecon (Zhang et al., 2019), consistent with morphological and ANITA‑gene evidence (APG IV, 2016). Recent taxonomic adjustments have formalized historical usage by conserving Meconopsis over Papaver for the Himalayan group, thereby stabilizing M. cambrica as the type (Barber et al., 2015). Some regional floras retain a broader treatment, subsuming Meconopsis into Papaver (e.g., Wu & Raven, 1999), but the accepted circumscription aligns with POAP (2022) and modern monographic treatments (Grey‑Wilson, 2000).
Human relevance focuses on horticulture: high‑elevation alpines prized for vivid petal colors and shade tolerance, seed lists distributed worldwide, and selective breeding by societies such as the Meconopsis Group (Grey‑Wilson, 2000; Meconopsis Group, 2019). Few taxa are cultivated as ornamentals beyond alpine gardening; no Meconopsis species constitute timber, agricultural crops, or notable weeds. Conservation concerns are acute for narrow endemics facing habitat degradation and climate-driven upward migration pressure; standardized IUCN assessments are still lacking for most taxa. Future work should prioritize phylogenomics and field-based red‑list assessments to secure the long‑term survival of this Himalayan flagship lineage.
