Dactylicapnos (Wall.) belongs to Papaveraceae subfamily Fumarioideae, a lineage of fumitories long recognized as a distinct family (Fumariaceae) but subsumed by molecular evidence into Papaveraceae (APG, 2016). The genus comprises twining or scrambling herbaceous climbers that are primarily Himalayan, extending into the Hengduan Mountains and adjacent parts of western China; species number about ten. The type species is Dactylicapnos scandens, widely treated as the name-bearing entity for the genus.

Vegetatively the plants are herbaceous climbers with swollen nodes; leaves are alternate, compound, typically with a few foliolate divisions and minute stipules. The inflorescence is a raceme or panicle of pendant to nodding, bilaterally symmetric flowers. Flowers are small to moderate, with two sepals and four petals; the inner petals are partly joined at the apex forming a shallow “boat,” while the outer petals each bear a conspicuous, often divergent spur; the receptacle bears four nectaries. The ovary is superior, bicarpellary, with parietal placentation, and the fruit is a dehiscent capsule producing small, flattened seeds.

Diversity and range concentrate in the Himalaya–Hengduan arc, with several taxa endemic to high elevations along the southern slopes of the Himalaya and in the Sino-Himalayan borderlands. Habitats include open slopes, shrubberies, and forest margins from mid to upper montane zones, where the vines clamber over rocks and low vegetation. Many species are localized and narrowly distributed, implying a pattern of allopatric differentiation typical of Sino-Himalayan alpine floras.

No robust chromosome base number is uniformly reported across the genus in recent sources; counts have been recorded for select taxa, but a general base number remains uncertain.

Taxonomy and phylogeny: Dactylicapnos is historically embedded within the tribe Fumarieae, which includes the closely allied genera Corydalis, Dicentra, and Fumaria (Lidén, 1986; WFO, 2024). Molecular phylogenetic work has reaffirmed that Fumarioideae are nested within Papaveraceae (APG, 2016) and that Dactylicapnos forms part of a clade with Dicentra and Fumaria (Zhang et al., 2008). Several species formerly treated in Corydalis sect. Dactylocapnos were transferred to Dactylicapnos by Burtt in the twentieth century; current circumscription follows this alignment (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Alternative treatments retaining a broader Corydalis concept have been noted, especially prior to molecular revisions, but recent accounts consistently recognize Dactylicapnos as a distinct genus.

Human relevance: few species are cultivated as ornamentals, appreciated for delicate, spurred flowers; the plants are not widely used in forestry, horticulture, or agriculture. No species are recognized as major weeds in global databases.

Conservation and outlook: while many species occupy remote montane habitats, localized distributions render them sensitive to habitat degradation; standardized assessments and red listing are incomplete for the majority of taxa and constitute a priority for future research (POWO, 2024).
