The genus Adlumia (Raf. ex DC.) belongs to Papaveraceae, subfamily Fumarioideae (APG IV, 2016). It is monotypic, containing the single species Adlumia fungosa (Aiton) Spreng., designated the type (POWO, 2024). Adlumia fungosa is native to the eastern United States and adjacent Canada, with a core range in the Appalachians and scattered populations from New England to the southern Appalachians (WFO, 2024).

Plants are twining vines, annual or biennial. Stems climb over adjacent vegetation. Leaves are petiolate, divided into two or three primary leaflets that are further dissected into narrow lobes; stipules are absent. The inflorescence is a terminal or axillary raceme bearing pendulous tubular bilabiate flowers. Each flower has four petals fused into a tube with a nectar spur, a character of Fumarioideae; the calyx consists of two small sepals. The androecium comprises six stamens in two bundles, the ovary is unilocular with parietal placentation. Fruit is a dehiscent capsule releasing many small arillate seeds.

The species occupies two ecological groups: populations on calcareous soils of the northern Appalachians and those on more acidic substrates in the southern mountains. Typical habitats are mesic shaded woodlands, stream banks, and rocky outcrops at 200–900 m (WFO, 2024). The disjunct range likely reflects persistence through Quaternary climatic fluctuations.

The life cycle is biennial: a basal rosette in the first year gives way to a climbing flowering shoot in the second. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, though detailed pollinator records are scarce. Chromosome counts for Adlumia fungosa consistently give 2n = 16, indicating a base number x = 8 (Löve & Löve, 1975). Seed morphology suggests possible ant dispersal (myrmecochory), but explicit documentation is lacking.

Recent phylogenies place Adlumia in Papaveraceae, sister to Dicentra and Corydalis (Stevens, 2001). It is monotypic with no subgenera or sections (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Historically some authors (e.g., Hutchinson, 1973) merged it into Dicentra, but later treatments retain it as distinct based on morphological and molecular evidence. No major re‑circumscriptions have changed its limits.

Although not widely cultivated, Adlumia fungosa is occasionally used in native‑plant restoration and specialty horticulture for its graceful climbing habit and delicate flowers; it is not invasive or a weed.

The species is listed as threatened or endangered in several state assessments because of habitat loss, logging, and climate‑driven moisture changes (WFO, 2024). Targeted surveys and genetic studies are needed to guide management. Future research integrating phylogeography and climate modeling may help secure its long‑term persistence.
