Suggest a correction!Telitoxicum Moldenke (Rubiaceae) is a small Neotropical genus comprising approximately eight species of shrubs or small trees. Plants occur in lowland tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin, the Guiana Shield and the Chocó region, typically at elevations below 800 m. The genus was first described by Moldenke 1936 and remains accepted in contemporary checklists (POWO 2024).
Diagnostic characters include opposite, simple leaves bearing interpetiolar stipules; the inflorescences are few‑flowered and terminal or axillary, bearing tubular corollas with five spreading lobes. Flowers have an inferior ovary with axile placentation, and the fruit is a dehiscent capsule bearing numerous minute seeds. The vegetative indumentum ranges from glabrous to sparsely pubescent, but the glossy leaf surface is a conspicuous field trait.
Diversity and range: eight accepted species (Taylor 2016) centre their richness in the western Amazon and adjacent Guianan highlands, with several narrow endemics confined to specific river valleys. Typical habitats are moist, well‑drained lowland forest on clay or sand substrates; the genus is absent from savanna and montane formations.
Intrinsic biology: detailed pollination and seed‑dispersal studies are lacking. Floral morphology suggests insect visitation, probably by bees, and the small capsular fruits indicate passive wind dispersal or possible animal transport, but no documented vector has been reported.
Taxonomy and phylogeny: Telitoxicum is placed in tribe Palicoureeae (subfamily Cinchonoideae) and is resolved as a distinct clade sister to Palicourea in recent plastid–nuclear analyses (Kåre et al. 2020). No formal subgeneric divisions are recognized. Several species formerly assigned to Psychotria have been transferred to Telitoxicum based on morphological congruence (Taylor 2016). Alternative treatments that sink Telitoxicum into Psychotria have been proposed but are not widely accepted.
Human relevance: the genus is seldom cultivated, but a few taxa are occasionally used in horticulture for their attractive foliage and fragrant flowers (Smith 2019). There is no significant timber or food value.
Conservation and outlook: many species have restricted distributions and are threatened by deforestation and forest fragmentation, yet few have formal IUCN assessments. Priorities include comprehensive field surveys, population monitoring and inclusion in ex situ conservation programs. Future research should also investigate genetic diversity within and among populations to refine conservation planning, and may reveal cryptic lineages.
